FIAN Europe Joins Civil Society and Farmers to Urge Stronger Climate Action in EU Agriculture Policy

On June 5, 2025, FIAN Europe, alongside 16 other civil society organisations and representatives of farmers across Europe, co-signed a joint letter addressed to European Commissioner for Climate Action Wopke Hoekstra. The letter calls for the EU to maintain and strengthen its climate ambition in the 2040 climate target, particularly in relation to the agri-food sector.

Sent on the eve of crucial discussions on the 2040 climate framework, the letter expresses deep concern over potential loopholes being considered by the European Commission—such as reliance on international carbon offsets or deviation from the EU’s domestic reduction commitments.

The signatories emphasize the transformative role that food systems can play in meeting climate goals, highlighting evidence-based pathways for the agricultural sector to reduce emissions by 44–60% by 2040. These include agroecology, organic farming, and a shift away from industrial livestock production.

“The EU must stop viewing agriculture as a problem to compensate for, and instead unlock its vast potential for climate, health, and biodiversity,” said Almudena Garcia Sastre of FIAN Europe. “We advocate for binding targets and a just transition that puts farmers, rural communities, and the right to food at the center.”

The letter calls for :

  • A binding, ambitious agricultural emissions target aligned with the Paris Agreement ;
  • Clear support for sustainable practices in the next EU budget ;
  • Accountability throughout the food chain ;
  • Strengthened public procurement of agroecologically and locally produced food, ensuring access to healthy, nutritious, and sustainable food.

As climate impacts mount, the EU faces a critical choice : maintain business as usual or drive a bold, inclusive transformation of its agri-food system. FIAN Europe stands firmly with those calling for the latter.
